The Hustle for Hope 5K was created to increase awareness, education, and support through Hope for HIE.  Olivia was diagnosed with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), which is a type of birth injury causing newborn brain damage that is caused by oxygen deprivation and limited blood flow. As new parents learning to advocate for our daughter we chose to join in on the Hustle for Hope 5K. 

           

 

The evening of May 14th, 2020 I posted a video in a private FB group I created for my daughters updates, which contains mostly family and a couple of close friends. I didn't think much of it but I opened it to them as well if they wanted to join in. I said we were going to walk the following day for our daughter and if others wanted to walk in their neighborhoods or wherever they felt comfortable too (due to COVID-19) and to just post a picture in support. By 9:00 am the following morning we already had family RUNNING for her! Shortly after came floods of pictures from family and friends hashtagging #hopeforolivia #hustleforhope #hopeforHIE. There were people walking for her from Tacoma, to Eastern Washington, to Texas, and all over. It brought tears to our eyes and at that moment I knew we weren't in this alone. The support was so overwhelming!
